Christmas Countdown 2023: Day 8: Invasion Planet Earth

December 12th, 2023

Christmas 2019, Invasion Planet Earth – in which Toyah had/has a starring lead role and also performs the end credits title song, Step Into The New World, released as a digital single simultaneously as the film premiered – was screening in numerous cinemas around the UK.

With the tagline: They’re coming, and reviews boasting “British sci-fi at its best” and “A British classic… War Of The World meets Independence Day“, the film was being compared to enduring sci fi movie blockbusters, and is now considered a cult film.

Invasion Planet Earth – originally titled Kaleidoscope Man – had been an enduring, mammoth, film project and a labour of love for its creator, Simon Cox, for many years.

• See much more info on Invasion Planet Earth, here and here. The film is available on DVD and in digital format. NB. A few months after the original release of Step Into The New World, the song was also released on the Planetary Invasion Mix.

Coventry Live: Invasion Planet Earth – Special Screening

March 13th, 2023

Special edition of sci-fi cult classic to be screened in Nuneaton

It is the handiwork of a movie maker who has his eyes on his next blockbuster

A Nuneaton movie maker is to host the first screening of a special edition of his sci-fi cult classic to help fund his next blockbuster. Simon Cox has turned to innovative ways to help raise funds for his next film – ‘Of Infinite Worlds’ – including trying to sell 20,000 mugs.

Now he is hosting a number of local screenings of his previous hit, ‘Invasion Planet Earth’, and this Thursday (March 9) there will be a special screening in his hometown.

It is being held at Nuneaton Christian Fellowship and will give people the chance to see a special version of the feature film, which was sold across the world.

“This sci-fi movie was shot in Nuneaton, Coventry and Birmingham and was a true passion project that took nearly 10 years to make,” he said. “It was inspired by classic 1970’s science fiction and features 80’s pop icon, Toyah Willcox. It has sold all around the world and is becoming a bit of a cult classic.”

Culture Fix: Step Into The New World (New Mix)

Music: Toyah Delivers Alien-Themed Bop ‘Step Into the New World’

Toyah Willcox has delivered a synth-heavy new mix of her track Step Into the New World. The iconic British pop-rocker leads us the dancefloor in the Planetary Invasion Mix – and when we say dancefloor, in quarantine, that’s probably our living room floor.

The track featured in 2019 British sci-fi film Invasion Planet Earth which starred Toyah alongside Simon Haycock and Lucy Drive. It was directed by Simon Cox – his first narrative feature since 1998’s indie horror Driven. As for the new mix, it is an absolute delight to see Toyah return with a bit of dystopian dance music – something that she shined with in her recently re-released 2008 album In the Court of the Crimson Queen.

Toyah released the excellent EP Four from Toyah in 2018. Listen to the new mix of Step Into the New World below.

Britflicks Reviews: BritFlicks Reviews Simon Cox’s Imaginative Sci-Fi Invasion Planet Earth: A true one off from a very wide imagination… Coming from the mind of writer/director, Simon Cox, Invasion Planet Earth, is one of those films that is a true original. It was also made over 17 years, which by anyone’s standards is a long production line! However, the film is set very much in the here and now, but of course, the question does arise, ‘how much’ of it dates from 17 years ago – Continue reading…

Vulture Hound: Invasion Planet Earth – Film Review

December 3rd, 2019

A four star review for Invasion Planet Earth, the film which is showing in cinemas for one day only this Thursday.

Almost a decade from script to screen, the labour of love that is Invasion Planet Earth is bold, ambitious, with tongue in cheek humour that occasionally pops up in an otherwise solid science-fiction drama. It will appeal to fans of the science fiction genre from all eras, particularly. It may be pitched, by marketing people, as a British Independence Day (there’s a nod to that in the dialogue), but it’s far from that as Simon Cox, writer and director, flits between drama, science fiction and action with deft awareness of just how preposterous his story is. The story does deliver a tale that has depth and weight amongst its familiar “aliens attack earth” trope, especially as the truth is revealed.

As UK studios and cinemas fill up with mega-budget U.S. superhero movies, here’s a rare David and Goliath story from the other end of the spectrum. Micro-budget UK sci-fi film Invasion Planet Earth, a passion project 20 years in the making, has secured UK distribution.

Kaleidoscope Man – Coming Soon!

February 3rd, 2019

kman16aIn Case You Missed The News…

If you haven’t already heard, I have some great news. After 7 years in production and nearly 10 years before that in development, our super ambitious sci-fi thriller, Kaleidoscope Man, is at last completed.

The last 3 months have been a true roller-coaster for me. It started back on the 18th Aug 2018, when we finally locked the picture. This had been after a good 6 months of working on the fine cut.

Next we got to work on the sound track. I did the foley recording (footsteps), Keith Tinman track laid the sound effects, Benjamin Symons fine-tuned the music score and Alan Snelling recorded the ADR, mixed the music and then did the full 5.1 surround sound mix.

On the picture side, the edit went to Narduzzo Too at Pinewood Studios, where it was fully colour graded by Harry Conquest and Vince Narduzzo, then it went to Out-Post Post production where the film was on-lined by Nigel Gorley and converted into various formats ready for delivery for cinema, TV, DVD and online.

We were very VERY lucky in that one of our stars, the lovely Toyah Willcox recorded an amazing song for the end titles. It’s a powerful and inspiration song called, Step into the New World, and it really captures the heart and soul of what the film is about. It was written by Alan Snelling and myself and we hope to officially release it soon.
