.Annie @ Christmas 2011: 'Cambridge News' Review
Thursday 22nd December, 2011 Theatre Review
Cambridge Corn Exchange
by Joanne Tynan

Starring national treasure Su Pollard as the lonely and cruel New York orphanage owner Miss Hannigan and David McAlister as the booming billionaire Mr Warbucks, this is a family romp packed full of laughs that delivers a heart-warming message of hope this Christmas.

Pollard shows exactly why she has been a household name for 30 years: her impeccable comic timing stole the show and had the audience in stitches – particularly when she threw herself at a shell-shocked President Roosevelt.

She is known for her physical comedy but her amazingly strong singing voice was a revelation and a pleasure to behold, while her desperate attempts to seduce any man who came into her eye-line left the male members of the audience quaking in their boots.

Michael Hogan offers a handy guide to a busy festive season of television

Christmas Day: Strictly Come Dancing, BBC One, 8pm

In case you’ve been suffering glitterball withdrawal symptoms, it’s back for a tinsel-toed special. The line-up includes Su Pollard of Hi-De-Hi fame and former boxer Barry McGuigan, but we’re tipping comedian Debra Stephenson or EastEnders villain Charlie Brooks. There’s also a song from Shakin’ Stevens, who everyone had forgotten existed.
.Annie @ Christmas 2011: 'What's on Stage' Review
Thursday 22nd December, 2011 Theatre Review
Cambridge Corn Exchange
by Anne Morley-Priestman

Tomorrow is always going to a better day. Well, it is if you’re an optimist – and that’s something which Little Orphan Annie, the sassy 11-year old heroine of Harold Gray’s comic strips and the Charles Meehan-Chrles Strouse musical based on them, most certainly is. Put children on a stage at Christmas, add a dog with personality, and (in theory) you’ve the recipe for a successful show.

.Cambridge News: Su Pollard: from Hi-de-Hi! to Annie
Friday 16th December, 2011 Interview
An excellent new interview with Su, from the 'Cambridge News'. Su talks Annie, Hi-de-Hi!, fashion, Madonna and much more. The Annie Christmas spectacular opens on Saturday afternoon at the Cambridge Corn Exchange.

Jennifer Shelton chats to TV fave – and alternative style icon – Su Pollard, as she prepares to bring a little festive cheer and recession-boosting optimism to Cambridge with Annie.

Su Pollard isn't known for her conservative style of dress, and as she strides cheerily into the Corn Exchange building for our interview, she doesn't disappoint. Adorned with a sparkly sequined top, knee-length socks, her trademark glasses and what looks like a tiny, scarlet top hat, she would give any panto dame a run for their money. She is also carrying a bright green and pink lunchbox. With pigs on.

It was given to her, she says, by some children she worked with on a recent show.

"It had pig sweets in it," she says, earnestly, settling down beside me as though for a cosy chat with an old pal. "Have you ever had one of those chewy pigs? They take about a day to eat! But it was a nice thought. And I've kept the box. . ."

.Female First: Give The Gift Of Life This Christmas
Wednesday 14th December, 2011 Press Clips
Su, along with numerous other famous faces, is lending her support to the seasonal blood donor campaign 2011.

Give the gift of life this Christmas by becoming a blood donor

Gary Lineker, Kirsty Gallacher and Kym Marsh are just a few of the celebrities that are urging you to give the gift of life this Christmas by becoming a blood donor.

Statistics reveal that as the Christmas decorations go up, blood stocks go down. And although 7000 units of blood are needed every day, appointments booked for December are far lower than the monthly average. In December 2010 there were 15,000 fewer donations than the average month. More blood donations are urgently needed and NHS Blood and Transplant is calling on the public to give the ultimate Christmas present this year - the gift of life – by becoming a blood donor.

Celebrities supporting the seasonal campaign include Gary Lineker, Kirsty Gallacher, Jenny Frost, Kym Marsh and Su Pollard.

.Annie 2011: 'Spark Sunderland' Review
Friday 2nd December, 2011 Theatre Review
Sunderland Empire
by Jonny Chambers

I think it’s safe to say, If I were to hum a tune from Annie, you would instantly recognise it. This timeless classic is loved the world over, with its memorable score and heartwarming optimism. The acclaimed film adaption helped skyrocket this musical – based on a comic strip into the hearts of millions, a position it has retained for many years since.

Beady eyed visitors to the Spark website or those of you who have been listening to the review show recently will know I recently caught up with Su Pollard. Pollard takes the reigns as villainous child-loather Miss Hannigan. Having played the role on and off over the past decade she inevitably has the character off to a T. Typically ‘hammy’ and suitably hilarious, Pollard certainly stole the show for me.

The sun’ll come out tomorrow, Bet your bottom dollar that ... Yes, that’s right! Annie has stopped off at the Sunderland Empire for a week-long run of musical magic.

Superb casting sees Su Pollard as Miss Hannigan, providing a hilarious portrayal of the love-to-hate character.

The cast works with the orphanage scenes, and not once do scenes feel over-crowded.

.Annie 2011: 'Journal Live' Review
Friday 2nd December, 2011 Theatre Review
Sunderland Empire
by Angela Upex

It's a heart-warming tale of a little girl’s rise from rags to riches which brings a smile to everyone’s face.

Star of stage and screen, Su Pollard (Hi-De-Hi) is the dastardly Miss Hannigan and David McAlister (Hollyoaks, EastEnders, Mike Bassett TV and Brideshead Revisited) makes a welcome return as the billionaire Oliver Warbucks.

Su plays the hard-drinking boss of the orphanage with great style and humour. Her light-hearted comedy in the first act evolves to show a darker side in act two and the audience were captivated throughout.

.Annie 2011: 'What's on Stage' Review
Friday 2nd December, 2011 Theatre Review
Sunderland Empire
by John Dixon

The cast of Annie need not worry about the old saying “do not appear with children and animals ” as it comes with the territory from the start.

Su Pollard, as always, gives a sterling performance as the wicked, alcoholic Miss Hannigan, belting out her solo numbers to great effect, while hitting the mark exactly on the comedy front. But special mention must be made of Audrey Leybourne, who plays Mrs. Pugh, one of Daddy Warbucks staff. While joining in the musical numbers, and noticeably shepherding the orphans during the Christmas scene, her smile lights up the stage and is fondly remembered as one of The Roly Polys.

Thursday 1st December, 2011 Theatre Review
Sunderland Empire
by Katy Wheeler

The songs may be saccharine, the accents may be hammy, but you’ve got to hand it to Annie – it’s a great show.

It was Su Pollard, however, who stole the show. It’s the second time I’ve seen the actress in the role of little girl-hater Miss Hannigan and she never fails to impress – I wish she was in more scenes.

She’s a great comic actress who commands the stage and her voice in tracks such as Little Girls and Easy Street is simply superb.
