Annie: The Alhambra, Bradford
By Rod McPhee

As a novice I wasn't quite prepared to see the star of this rags-to-riches story sporting a head of straight hair. Surely this is the most famous mop of curly locks in history? Well, apart from Shirley Temple's and Brian May's.

But our little Annie appeared with a severe fringe and extremities which seemed to shoot off at gravity-defying angles. Lady Gaga would think twice about this wig.

Once over the tonsorial shock, stage two involved adapting to the voice of Victoria Sian Lewis in the lead role. I quickly realised that this slightly crude, shrill tone was all part and parcel of the central character's New York rough diamond delivery.

But she was great in the part, really great. At least as far as an Annie novice could tell. An unqualified blast was Su Pollard in the role of cruel orphanage boss Miss Hannigan.

She hilariously milked the drunken bum routine to perfection while still gaining respect by booming out some great numbers showcasing her voice and illustrating why she's still getting plum roles after all these years.

Annie: The Alhambra, Bradford
By Emma Clayton

As grey skies descend on a particularly rain-lashed August, a cheery little girl singing the words “The sun will come out tomorrow” is just the tonic we need.

I’ve managed to get through life without ever having seen the musical Annie, either on stage or screen, and having always imagined it to be schmaltz on toast, I didn’t really feel I was missing out.

But I found myself enjoying this charming rags-to-riches tale about a little girl stuck in an orphanage in downtown depression-hit New York, who dreams that one day her parents will rescue her.

There’s plenty of schmaltz, of course, but it’s all delightfully old-fashioned and you’d need a heart of stone not to fall for Annie and her dog, Sandy. The mutt was real, played by an impressively well trained dog called Danny, who melted the audience’s hearts, although I was more concerned about whether or not he could see through his long hair.

And plucky little orphan Annie was beautifully played by Victoria Sian Lewis. The young actress was on stage practically the whole time and her relentless optimism was infectious.

Her impressive numbers included the showstopper Tomorrow and I Don’t Need Anything But You, a lively duet with Daddy Warbucks. Annie’s nemesis is gin-soaked Miss Hannigan, played with perfect vaudeville-style comic timing by Su Pollard. Stumbling across the stage and belting out Easy Street and Little Girls with a voice as big as Ethel Merman’s, she was a delight.

.Yorkshire Evening Post:Interview: Su Pollard
.Sunday 29th August, 2010....................................................................................Interview
Another interview with Su from early August, from the 'Yorkshire Evening Post':

What images are conjured up when you think of Su Pollard? Crazy Clothes? Zany Glasses? Hi-de-Hi?

The chances are that most people, at least those people who haven't seen her perform live in a show, won't instantly recall a stage career stretching back over 35 years.

But long before her defining role as wannabe Maplins yellow coat Peggy Ollerenshaw, Su was doing everything she could to make her name as a singer.

"I remember appearing on Opportunity Knocks in about 1973," she says. "Believe it or not I was up against a singing Jack Russell – and came second!

"It wasn't the best of starts but what made it worse was that all the dog did was howl, which made me wonder how bad they thought my voice was."

The truth is that Su has one of theatreland's best voices. Sure, most of us may not talk about her in the same breath as Michael Ball or Elaine Paige, but in the West End she's held in high esteem.

.Bradford Telegraph & Argus: Su's New Role is Intoxicating
.Sunday 29th August, 2010....................................................................................Interview
Su was interviewed earlier this month, by the 'Bradford Telegraph & Argus':

The day after Su Pollard finishes rags-to-riches musical Annie in Bradford, she’ll be flying to Spain for her next role.

Su is making a cameo appearance in the new series of award-winning ITV comedy Benidorm, set against around the ‘all-inclusive’ world of the package holiday. “I’m playing myself, doing cabaret at a club in the resort,” says Su. “I can’t wait. It captures that whole scene perfectly; the way people spend two weeks on sun-loungers and barely move to get from the bar to the pool. They’re great characters and it’s beautifully written.”

Filming will be tinged with sadness following the recent death of actor Geoffrey Hutchings, who played Greater Manchester’s sun bed king Mel.

He and Madge, who spends her holidays whizzing around on a mobility scooter, were a core double act of the show and Su says Geoffrey’s sudden death from a suspected viral infection has had a devastating impact. “He’ll be missed,” she says.

Before landing in ‘Beni’, she’s touring the country playing gin-soaked Miss Hannigan, who runs the orphanage from where Annie begins her adventure.

.The List: Su Pollard Jets Off To Benidorm
.Wednesday 25th August, 2010...........................................................................Press Clips
Su Pollard has landed a cameo role in 'Benidorm'. The 60-year-old actress is set to play herself doing a cabaret act in the ITV sitcom - which is set in the titular Spanish holiday resort - and has promised the scenes of her singing will amuse fans of the show.

She said on 'This Morning': "I'm going as myself and I'm singing at the Benidorm Palace doing cabaret and everything goes wrong! It'll be really funny."

Although pleased to be starring in the show, the 'Hi-de-Hi!' star is also keen to replace Matt Smith as the current Timelord in 'Doctor Who'. She explained: "I would love to be in 'Doctor Who'. I would make a good Doctor."

However, if bosses on the sci-fi series are unwilling to give her a spot on the show Su is also keen to appear in a soap. She added: "I'd like to be in 'Coronation Street', which I absolutely love, and then I'd like to be in 'EastEnders'. But I'd have to be a chirpy character as they are all near death and depressed."

.Farewell Mabel: Barbara New R.I.P.
.Tuesday 1st June, 2010.................................................................................Barbara New
Barbara New, the legendary Mabel Wheeler in You Rang, M'Lord?, passed away on 24th May 2010.

Barbara was a great favourite with fans of Perry and Croft's work. She will forever be immortalised as Lord Meldrum's much put upon daily woman Mabel, but was also seen in Hi-de-Hi! and as station busybody Vera Plumtree in Oh Doctor Beeching!

She has also played many other roles in British television programmes including Z Cars, Emu's Broadcasting Company, Softly, Softly, Budgie, Ripping Yarns, The Bill, Bread, Within These Walls, Shine On Harvey Moon, and the silent Ronnie Barker comedy By the Sea.

Barbara was also a regular with The Two Ronnies and coined a much imitated catchphrase in 'Course you can Malcolm!' for the Vicks Sinex ads of the 1980's. Her most recent appearance was as Ali G's nan in the 2002 film Ali G Indahouse.
