.The Sentinel - Rob A Happy Camper with Hi-de-Hi! Book
.Saturday 31st October, 2009.............................................................................Press Clips
Friend of Su Online, and Su, Rob Cope was interviewed about his new book, 'The Hi-de-Hi! Companion', in 'The Sentinel' yesterday:

Author pens a book about hit show Hi-de-Hi!

When a teenage Rob Cope wrote to Hi-de-Hi! star Su Pollard, it was as a fan of her unique brand of showbiz.

And almost three decades later he picked up his pen again to spend two years writing an authoritative guide to the hugely-successful show, its cast, crew and filming.

Thirty years to the month that work began on recording the hit sitcom, his hard work paid off as his book was unveiled.

The Hi-de-Hi! Companion was launched by the show's writers and stars at a signing session during a reunion at the Essex resort where it was first filmed.

Rob, aged 43, from Burslem, said: "There were fans there and we had a big signing morning when we unveiled the book.

"They were signing for something like two hours and we sold £2,000 worth of books in a couple of hours. It was very popular."

Hi-de-Hi! was the third collaboration between writers Jimmy Perry and David Croft, who had previously penned Dad's Army and It Ain't Half Hot Mum, and became one of the biggest comedy series of the decade, with about 13 million regular viewers over its 58 episodes.

.North Wales Pioneer - Su Pollard Returns To Llandudno
.Saturday 24th October, 2009...............................................................................Interview
A new Su interview, with the 'North Wales Pioneer'. Annie opens at Venue Cymru, Llandudno next Tuesday.

The heart-warming rags-to-riches musical Annie will be coming to Llandudno's Venue Cymru for one week only this month.

Ahead of the popular show, the Pioneer caught up with Su Pollard who plays the dastardly Miss Hannigan, to find out what audiences can expect from the show and her fond memories of Llandudno.

"30 years - can you believe it?" exclaimed Su talking about the 30th anniversary of popular TV sitcom Hi-De-Hi. "There's going to be a big party and everyone is coming. The only thing is I've got to get there from Glasgow!

"We've all us really kept in touch, and followed each others careers. We've seen each others families grow up. It's such a lovely, well made comedy show. Everyone carries it around with them."

While TV audiences are sure to recognise the busy actress and singer, Su has been a regular on the theatre circuit having appeared in Annie numerous times.
Annie’s adventures from Miss Hannigan’s orphanage to the luxurious home of Oliver Warbucks, is a story that has been told all over the world for decades and is one of the best loved family musical of all time.

"It's a totally different technique on stage to TV," said Su. "You have to be very focused. On Hi-De-Hi you were allowed to be a bit more animated - the comedy was almost farcical. In musicals you have to be a bit more controlled but expression - you've got to get your voice over the orchestra!

"I started in theatre before TV - that's the right way to do it. Get experience in theatre first. So many young people want to take the short cut. Everyone wants to be an artist but people don't want to go through what they think is a gruelling practise.
"It's a fantastic job. It's good to put effort in to get reactions. You have to learn the craft and you're always learning something new."

Su last came to North Wales with Shout and was eager to sing the town's praises.

"Llandudno - flippin' love it!" she beamed. "I love the audiences there. This time last year I was there and it was my birthday. We went to a fabulous italian restaurant and played musical chairs and set fire to the curtains. It was an accident - I had these sparklers - but the owner was alright though!"

With numerous projects in the pipe-line including a one-woman stand up and singing show, and the possibility of a dance version of her 1986 hit Starting Together, the British legend shows no sign of stopping anytime soon.

"For me it's all about the work - you get out what you give in to the performances."

Annie will be showing at Venue Cymru between October 27-31. For more information or to book tickets contact the Box Office on 01492 872000 or visit the website at www.venuecymru.co.uk

.Stour & Avon Magazine - Su & Chris Looking Forward To Panto Time
.Saturday 24th October, 2009...............................................................................Interview
A recent interview with Su, and Chris Jarvis, by 'Stour & Avon Magazine':

Su Pollard can lay up a table for 100 people.

This and a multitude of other snippets tumbled from the mouth of the irrepressible actress who will forever be remembered as the daft cleaning maid from Hi-de-Hi who yearned to become a Yellow Coat.

Su is coming to Bournemouth Pavilion this Christmas to star as the Wicked Queen alongside CBeebies presenter Chris Jarvis - who is also the director - in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Bubbling with enthusiasm for this her 30th panto, Su was at the BIC this week for the launch of what promises to be a top class production which will include local children from the Stage Door School of Dance and Drama.

Su is proud of her ten-year stint in BBC's Hi-de-Hi.

"I owe everything I've learned from the writers David Croft and Jimmy Perry," she said, adding that in casting the sitcom they had been determined to give unknowns a chance.

This series was followed by You Rang me Lord.

"We had lots of tutoring and that was how I learned to lay a table. We had authentic props and you wouldn't believe how heavy everything was," she said.

Oh Dr Beeching was her third hit sitcom.

"They were fun parts, and I suppose today they would be considered as OTT. It was highly comedic and almost farce," she said, adding that her favourite TV programme is Midsomer Murders.

Su, who is from Nottingham, but has been living in London for 36 years, first took to the boards in 1973 playing the role of the Blue Fairy. As well as pantos she has done many summer seasons and at the moment she is touring in Annie playing Miss Hannigan.

No interview with Su Pollard would be complete without mentioning her original take on fashion, which was highlighted in a national newspaper recently.

"Sometimes I lay my clothes out the night before, but often I just wear what I fancy, regardless of whether the items go together. Some of my clothes are 30 years old, and the most important thing is the material."

Commenting on her deliciously exuberant personality she said: "I'm very fortunate as my cup is always three-quarters full. I can't have negativity."

Bournemouth resident Chris Jarvis is also a panto regular and this will be his 16th, and fourth in Bournemouth. As Muddles, he will in effect be the 'children's friend'.

"Muddles' role is to work with the audience - and to annoy the Wicked Queen," said Chris who is as bubbly in every day life as he is on stage.

He came into showbusiness through the variety route of Butlin's, cabaret and radio, and today in addition to being a children's presenter he works with a number of orchestras including the Nottingham, London and BBC Philharmonic.

He is passionate about panto.

"It is a child's first experience of the theatre, and it is important that the story makes sense. Panto is in a good condition at the moment and is no longer a slave of the charts. We use songs from musicals, TV adverts and hits from the past. In ways TV has done us a great service. There are few sitcoms and we're taking over that role, producing clean comedy with music."

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs runs from Saturday 5th December to Sunday 3rd January at Bournemouth Pavilion.

The ticketline is 0844 576 3000 (Interview by Marilyn Barber).

From the legendary Jimmy Perry & David Croft comes the Complete DVD Collection of that hymn to the great British holiday, HI-DE-HI. From 2 November2 2009, when we are dreaming of winter sun, wallow in this heady brew that is part Carry On-style farce, part class comedy and part nostalgic romp. Based on Perry's own experiences working as a Butlin's Redcoat following the war, it was set at the fictional Maplin's holiday camp in 1959.

As the new season starts, the staff are baffled to discover the place is now being run by Jeffrey Fairbrother (Simon Cadell), a Cambridge archaeology professor who's looking for a change of scene. The bashful, softly spoken boffin is clearly ill-suited to his new posting and immediately provokes the ire of comic Ted Bovis (Paul Shane), a shyster of the first order who had his eye on the job. In contrast, Welsh senior “Yellowcoat”, smouldering Gladys Pugh (Ruth Madoc), is very taken with the new arrival. Meanwhile, all Peggy Olerenshaw (Su Pollard), the over-excitable chalet maid who won viewers' hearts, can think of is becoming a Yellowcoat.

Weighing in with ten series’ and 58 episodes, HI-DE-HI was one of the very biggest comedy series of the ’80s, regularly drawing in 13 million viewers and won the BAFTA for Best Comedy in 1984. And as if in tribute, newspapers are reporting British holiday camps are set for a comeback this credit-crunched summer as families save money by spending their breaks at home. Hello, Campers!

Annie: Festival Theatre, Malvern
By Lauren Rogers

With recent banking disasters and rising unemployment fresh in all our minds the story of little orphan Annie still holds sway.

The saccharine sweet musical is ultimately uplifting, but it is set in the depths of the 1930s Depression. We meet homeless in Hooverville, we hear about the aggressive actions of German chancellor Adolf Hitler and we spend a night with impoverished orphanage ruled over by the drunk and untrustworthy Miss Hannigan.

It would be utter doom and gloom if not for ever-optimist Annie (Lydia Tunstall), whose plucky determination helps her find happiness.

When the show premiered on Broadway in 1977 the New York Times said: “To dislike the new musical Annie would be tantamount to disliking motherhood, peanut butter, friendly mongrel dogs and nostalgia”.

He was half right.

Chris Moreno’s production is enjoyable and the ensemble cast shone, but you won’t go to Hell if you find the unashamedly old-fashioned and sentimental storyline a bit much.

While Su Pollard was a comic Miss Hannigan, David McAlister was a superb Oliver ‘Daddy’ Warbucks and more than matched by Simone Craddock as Grace Farrell.

If the first act felt too long, the second was a marked improvement. Things really came to life in Warbucks' mansion and the final 15 minutes were dazzling.
.Annie UK Tour 2009 - Dartford Times Review

Annie: Orchard Theatre, Dartford
By Mark Campbell

The story of Little Orphan Annie and her single-handed victory over the crippling Great Depression was retold once more at the Orchard Theatre, Dartford, last week, writes Mark Campbell.

Annie was written by Thomas Meehan, Charles Strouse and Martin Charnin and based on an old American newspaper strip.

The musical has Annie being adopted by a businessman in 1930s New York, meeting the US president, solving the terrible financial crisis (plus ca change) and finally becoming a hero to millions.

This professional production, directed and choreographed by Roger Hannah, saw Hi-De-Hi! actress Sue Pollard receive top billing as the villainous Miss Hannigan.

She was good, but perhaps not as unpleasant as the role demanded.

Pollard's comic pratfalls and slovenly flirtatiousness, though funny, diluted the menace of this singularly sinister orphanage owner.

Annie's role was shared by Grace Glevey and Lydia Tunstall. On opening night I saw Lydia, and she gave a smashing, larger-than-life performance helped (or perhaps hindered) by an enormous red wig. Plenty of pizzazz and perfect for the part of the precocious 11-year-old.

David McAlister (who, from where I was sitting, resembled Star Trek actor Patrick Stewart) was very good as big-business magnate Oliver Warbucks.

He seemed to grow into the part as his heart opened to Annie's homespun charms, culminating in a delightful ballroom dance with the diminutive orphan.

.Annie UK Tour 2009 - Inside Ireland Review
.Saturday 24th October, 2009.................................................................................Theatre
Annie: Grand Opera House, Belfast
By Phil Allely

Annie chance of a ticket?

Who would have thought the story of a poor orphan and a multi-billionaire could become one of the world’s most well loved musicals?

Well thank goodness somebody did, Annie has been pleasing theatre goers around the globe for decades now and after witnessing this West End touring production in the Grand Opera House, I predict the show will still be going strong for many more.

Annie is a feel good show of the highest order. Our heroine is a precocious little red headed orphan and she resides in a run down orphanage in New York City. Set during the time of the US’s depression and huge job losses, mega-rich Oliver Warbucks decides to give a young boy orphan the chance to see Christmas in in style as his guest.

Of course he actually gets young tomboy Annie and his life and those of his staff get changed forever. This really is a show words can barely describe, the songs are infectious, the young cast are superb and very talented , making the adults step up heir game to match them. The appearance of a real dog (Annie’s stray pet Sandy) will get an aw from even the hardest hearted person I’d bet.

The sets deserve a mention too, to be honest I never knew the Opera House had that much space to house what Annie produces, the orphanage set is nicely grubby, the mansion and full staircase are grandiose, in fact each main set is equally impressive.

Cast wise it’s the kids who carry this production, there are over 40 performers and all play their part (many more than one) meaning one cannot really be picked out over the rest for superior praise. Hi Di Hi veteran Su Pollard should get a mention for her turn as the drunken and over flirtatious orphanage head Miss Hannigan, making her into a very real and scarily lifelike person.

With such sing-along classics as Tomorrow, It’s a Hard Knock Life and Easy Street among the set list you’ll be singing along in no time when you see Annie, trust me the opening night audience were all doing it.
.East Anglian Daily Times - Hello Campers! Hi-de-Hi Stars Return
.Tuesday 20th October, 2009.............................................................................Press Clips
Fans of the cult BBC show Hi-de-Hi descended on the Essex town where much of the series was filmed to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

Hundreds of fans as well as famous faces from the cast were in Dovercourt this weekend to take a walk down memory lane and reminisce about the popular 1980s programme.

Organised by dedicated fans Tony and Jo Tarran of Beach Road, Dovercourt, the two-day event included a quiz, a collection of out-takes from the show and a tour of filming locations for Hi-de-Hi in two vintage buses - one of which was used in five episodes.

Fans were taken to see the Electric Palace in Harwich and the site of the Warner's holiday camp in Low Road as well as part of Dovercourt beach.

The anniversary celebrations, which were based at the Cliff Hotel in Dovercourt where the cast and crew stayed during filming, also saw the launch of a book The Hi-de-Hi Companion which traces the history of the show and its journey through 58 episodes before it ended in 1988.

Stars of the show who came to the event included Paul Shane, Ruth Madoc, Su Pollard, Barry Howard and writer David Croft.

Fans travelled from as far away as Holland and Croatia to attend the anniversary celebrations.

Mr Tarran, a building control team manager for Colchester Borough Council, said: “I am Harwich born and bred and I watched the show the first time round and probably saw some of it being filmed. “It is a nostalgic thing - I loved the programme and loved the characters but it is also something to do with Dovercourt for me as well.

More than 300 people turned up to witness campers reunited on Sunday in Dovercourt.

Stars of the hit TV series Hi-De-Hi came from as far away as Australia to take over the Cliff Hotel to celebrate 30 years since the first episode was shown. Fans from Croatia, Holland, Ireland and Scotland had made the journey to Dovercourt, where the programme was filmed, to have their chance of meeting the cast.

Actors Su Pollard, Ruth Madoc, Barry Howard and writer David Croft signed the new book called the Hi-De-Hi Companion, released to coincide with the weekend, for more than two hours.

“It’s been extremely hectic,” said Su Pollard, who had flown down from Glasgow early on Sunday. “As soon as I got here I got out my ironing board and then it was time to meet everybody.

“It’s great to see all of the old friends again and to be back at Dovercourt. As soon as I saw that sun I knew I was here.”

Two of the original cast only had to pop round the corner to join in though as David and Tony Webb still live in Lawford and Dovercourt.

“We lived here when we were cast in the series and have never wanted to move away,” said David.

Fans were queuing through the hotel to get a chance to meet the “legends”.

As expected, the Hi-de-Hi! 30th Anniversary Reunion event in Dovercourt was a resounding success, as www.hi-de-hi.net reports:

The Hi-de-Hi! 30th anniversary event in Dovercourt was a huge success. Thanks to everyone who made the effort to join us for this major celebration of the work of Perry and Croft. Sadly Jimmy is still recovering from his recent operation and was not able to join us, but David was our Guest of Honour and the roll call of cast members was impressive to say the least: Paul Shane, Ruth Madoc, Su Pollard, Barry Howard, David & Tony Webb, Terry Creasey, Chris Andrews, Michael Knowles, Susie Brann, Bill Pertwee and composer Roy Moore.

Highlights of the weekend included a bus tour of locations, Matt Grindley's brilliant magic, Vince Rayner's superb compereing, the showing of out takes and a video tribute to those no longer with us. Su Pollard and Michael Knowles surprised everyone by appearing as Ivy and Teddy Meldrum in a short sketch as their You Rang, M'Lord? characters and Ruth Madoc assumed the role of Gladys Pugh once more opposite Andy Faber, our own 'Jeffrey Fairbrother'.

A full photo feature will be coming soon... but in the meantime THANKS to attenders, VIPS and Guest of Honour for making the weekend one we will all remember.
.North Wales Daily Post - Su Pollard's Not So Cuddly In Annie At Llandudno
.Saturday 17th October, 2009...............................................................................Interview
A new Su interview from the 'North Wales Daily Post':

It may be more than two decades since the BBC sitcom Hi de Hi was put to sleep, but the character of ditzy but loveable Peggy Ollerenshaw is still going strong.

Every so often, she makes an exclusive solo appearance on Su Pollard’s doorstep.

"Young children knock on my front door and say ‘Is Peggy there please?’," explains the 59-year-old actress, who played the holiday camp chalet maid for eight years between 1980-88.

"I say ‘come back tomorrow’ and put my outfit on for them, just for a bit of fun."

Currently, though, she has a less likeable role, touring UK theatres as the dastardly Miss Hannigan in the musical Annie.

Despite the orphanage matron being traditionally played as a villainous rogue, Pollard has a lot of sympathy for the character.

"I try and bring a bit of sympathy to the role for her. I’m trying to get the public to understand that she’s not just horrible, it’s circumstances.

"She’s so upset about these terrible children that give her the runaround – dangling dead mice in front of her and things like that. She’s terribly frustrated, poor woman, and she thinks ‘I’m going to take solace in the Jack Daniels’."

Pollard’s aim is to bring out the character’s funny side.

"It’s a good part," she says. "She’s not a very nice woman really, but I try and get some humour into it with her drinking habits.

Su is a favourite at Malvern Theatres after her brilliant run as the wicked stepmother in Christmas panto Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs two years ago, when she won over legions of young fans who had never seen Hi De Hi!, Two Up, Two Down or You Rang M’Lord? .Su Supports Wear It Pink 2009
.Saturday 17th October, 2009...................................................................................Events
Su is, once again, lending her support to 'Wear It Pink'. The 2009 event takes place on Friday 30th October.

Where does my wear it pink donation go?
Breast Cancer Campaign uses all wear it pink donations to fund innovative, world-class research throughout the UK and Ireland to understand how breast cancer develops, leading to improved diagnosis, treatment, prevention and cure. The charity currently supports around 130 projects worth £15million in 43 centres across the UK and Ireland.

Why take part in wear it pink?
wear it pink is a fun and easy way to donate to Campaign and help fund breast cancer research. Last year, you raised £3.5 million which helped to fund projects like Dr Ingunn Holen's award-winning research which found that if two drugs were given in a particular order at specific time intervals, breast tumours were almost completely destroyed. This discovery could ultimately lead to improved chances of survival for thousands of women undergoing treatment and bring us a step closer to beating breast cancer.

Why is Breast Cancer Campaign's work important?
Breast cancer research has made considerable progress over the past two decades and vital work is still underway. Past research has resulted in improvements in quality of life and survival. However, one woman in nine in the UK will be diagnosed during her lifetime. Each research project funded by the charity brings us a step closer to beating breast cancer.

.Saturday 17th October, 2009...............................................................................Interview
'The York Press' have just published a Su interview by Steve Burbridge. You may recognise this as it was previously available at the 'Sunderland Echo' in August.

“You'll have to excuse me if I’m a bit verbose, you know what I’m like, I don’t just answer yes or no.”

It’s a little unconventional for an interview to begin with a warning, but unconventional is an adjective that is often associated with former Hi-De-Hi star Su Pollard, who celebrates her 60th birthday next month while in York The actress, who made her name as scatter-brained chalet maid and wannabe Yellow Coat Peggy Ollerenshaw in the award-winning sit-com, is once again starring as Miss Hannigan, the hard-faced, drunken orphanage boss in Annie.

As wacky as ever, Su sparked a stir earlier this year when she was photographed wearing a denim ra-ra miniskirt, fluffy jacket, pink patterned tights, fluorescent yellow leg-warmers, leopard-print shoes and a studded dog collar.

.Hereford Tines - Family Favourite Annie Opens In Malvern
.Tuesday 6th October, 2009...............................................................................Press Clips
Television and stage star Su Pollard returns to Malvern Theatres to star in family-favourite musical Annie from Tuesday, October 20.

She is supported by television favourite David McAlister (Doctors/Holby Blue) not to mention a West End cast of 40 artistes.

From its Broadway beginnings to the classic film musical, Annie’s heart-warming rags-to-riches story has been told all over the world for decades.

Instantly recognisable with her fiery red hair, orphan Annie has one adventure after another as she travels from her fist home in the New York orphanage to the luxurious mansion belonging to Oliver Warbucks.

Su Pollard plays the drunken, harassed Miss Hannigan, with David McAlister taking on the role of multi-millionaire Oliver Warbucks.

Su’s theatre credits include Grease, Little Shop of Horrors, Godspell, Me and My Girl and most recently Shout!

Annie has a brilliantly memorable score including It’s A Hard Knock Life, Easy Street and of course the legendary Tomorrow.

Annie runs from Tuesday till Saturday, October 20-24. Tickets cost £16.50-£26.50 (under 16s all seats £12) available on 01684 892277 or at malvern-theatres.co.uk.

Annie: Theatre Royal, Nottingham
By Lizzie Carr

The sun certainly did come out yesterday evening at Nottingham Theatre Royal’s opening night of the classic rags-to-riches tale, Annie. The timeless appeal of the red-haired orphan, which started as a comic strip ‘Little Orphan Annie’ in 1924, before being adapted into a film and finally hitting Broadway in 1977, was reflected by the range of ages in the audience at the theatre, spanning the very young to the very old.

Little explanation of the plot is needed as almost everyone, at some point, has been touched by heart-warming story of the plucky orphan. Annie’s cheery disposition sees her taken under the wing of millionaire business tycoon Oliver Warbucks for two weeks over the Christmas period. Warbucks’ initial steely persona gives way to Annie’s infectious charm and he decides to adopt her.

Su Pollard gives a flawless performance as Miss Hannigan

Nottingham-born actress, Su Pollard, most famous for her role in the BBC sitcom Hi-De-Hi! stole the show with her flawless performance as Miss Hannigan, the drunken matriarch who runs the New York orphanage. Her perfect comedy timing had the audience laughing from the opening scene right through to the finale.
