Eve, 2006: 'Aladdin 2006' - The
Argus review |
Aladdin,
Theatre Royal, Brighton, until
Jan 14 By Lynn Eccles It's
panto time again, oh yes it is.
And
Brighton has been invaded by
cross-dressing dames, camp heroes
and a riot of colourful costumes
- it's like Pride with baubles.
Performing
at the Theatre Royal, X Factor
finalist Chico and Eighties pop
star Toyah Willcox head up a
strong cast in panto favourite
Aladdin.
Chico
puts in an earnest performance as
Aladdin, really putting his all
into the role.
The
younger members of the audience
adore him and his Chico Time
finale even has the grown-ups
dancing in the aisles.
Toyah
Willcox plays both the Genie of
the Lamp and the Genie of the
Ring. Her performance is
technically faultless but the
only sparks when she appears on
stage are the pyrotechnics used
to indicate her bursting out of
the lamp.
The
real star of the show is
Granville Saxton's Abanazar. He
clearly relishes the role and has
the children jumping out of their
seats to boo him. He also holds
the show together when things go
wrong.
When
Chico gets a bout of the giggles,
Saxton raises a laugh and gets
him back on track with a Simon
Cowell mantra and when the show
suffers a set malfunction, it's
better than if everything was
running smoothly.
Jon
Clegg's Wishee Washee has a great
rapport with the audience and is
the children's favourite but that
might be to do with the sweets he
catapults into the audience.
American
Jennifer Hubilla is a beautiful
Princess Jasmine and puts in a
fine performance in her very
first pantomime but David Alder's
Dame is a bit tame for me - he
didn't manage to fill his
stilettos with enough
naughtiness.
The
set design is top-notch and the
flying carpet scene magical
enough to please even the most
cynical mums and dads. Everyone
should see a pantomime at
Christmas and Aladdin at the
Theatre Royal is a good choice.
Chico is a real entertainer and
by the end of the performance
you'll be shouting along with
him, what time is it?
It's
panto time.

Eve, 2006: 'Aladdin 2006' -
Financial Times review |
Aladdin, Theatre
Royal, Brighton
By Antony Thorncroft Very few
in the audience for this Aladdin
had come to see a pantomime: they
were there for Chico, the most
celebrated loser from the
television show The X-Factor, who
somehow managed to persuade the
nation to love him almost as much
as he loves himself.
As
things turned out, the Chico
claque had the rare treat of an
excellent panto, and a wonderful
advertisement for this most
treacherous of art forms. Even
Chico seemed cowed by the
professionalism of his fellow
performers: his Aladdin was
surprisingly self-effacing and,
although his voice carries too
uncanny a likeness to that of
Stavros, the kebab man, he
managed to keep up with the plot.
But
with David Alder as a benign
Widow Twankey, who mercifully
relied on acidic one-liners
rather than her underwear to make
an impact; Jon Clegg as a chipper
Wishee Washee, who kept the
action rolling nicely along with
sweets and sing-alongs; and
Granville Saxton as a towering
Abanazar, who gave back with
verbal credit anything the
audience threw at him, this was a
panto that hit all the customary
spots while ticking off the
topical references, from
television catchphrases to local
hospital cuts.
Also
egging things along nicely was
Toyah Willcox as the genie, an
excellent example to Chico that
there is a life after pop
mortality. Of course, like all
pantos, it went on too long but,
just as childish eyes started to
wander, a knockabout revision of
The Twelve Days of
Christmas, unleashing
toilet rolls into the stalls,
re-captured the attention.
Too
often the big names hired to sell
pantomimes make it obvious that
they are only there for the money
but this cast worked their
Chinese socks off and gave the
greatest British theatrical
tradition a timely boost.
Director Richard Baron kept the
longeurs to a minimum; the sets
and the band were fine; and there
were also dancers.

newsy bits & pieces! |
A
pantotastic picture of Toyah (by
Tristram Kenton), onstage at the
Theatre Royal, Brighton, as the
Genie of the Lamp in Aladdin.
Toyah and Chico have appeared in
an ad on BBC South Today.
Chico asks Toyah "What time
is it?" and then both
said... "It's panto
time!"
I've heard really good feedback
from those who have been to see
the show. I've even had some
messages from Chico fans
enthusing about how good Toyah is
in the show. Tell us something we
don't know... He He!!
There's still plenty of time to
see Aladdin. it runs right
through until 14th January 2007.
Here's hoping Toyah enjoys her

| Christmas
Eve, 2006: 'Aladdin 2006' - Panto
preview |
Aladdin,
Theatre Royal, Brighton A magic
carpet flying over the West Pier?
It sounds strange, but then again
what should you expect from this
version of Aladdin, starring
feisty Eighties pop icon Toyah
Willcox and X-Factor finalist
Chico?
With
so much to choose from during the
pantomime season it's difficult
to decide on a particular show,
but panto veteran Willcox, who
plays the Genie, reckons this
production has it all.
"It's
such a spectacular production I
can't make up my mind about what
my favourite moment is," she
says. "That will come when
we start performing. Panto
audiences are great fun and at
the moment they are the only
missing ingredient."
The
successful mix is spiced up by
Chico, who, as readers of the
tabloids will know, has been
romantically linked with the
show's choreographer Suzanne
Mole.
"Chico's
absolutely brilliant," says
Willcox. "He's exactly what
you see on telly, he's incredibly
positive and very conscientious.
People are very perceptive of
whether you want to be there or
not and his enthusiasm makes him
perfect for the role. I think he
will be offered pantos for the
next 30 years."
The
story takes place long ago in the
Middle East and follows street
urchin Aladdin in his quest to
free the Genie of the Lamp and
win the love of Princess Jasmine,
played by Jennifer Hubilla from
the West End's Miss Saigon.
Director
Richard Baron, whose CV includes
the Hound of the Baskervilles at
the Nottingham Playhouse, has
created an all-singing,
all-dancing, traditional family
pantomime with big production
values to match.
Expect
plenty of brightly-coloured
costumes and a special
performance of Chico's
crowd-pleaser It's Chico Time,
which knocked Madonna from the
top of the charts earlier in the
year.
"Because
all of us are actors who've been
in the business for many years,
we can take it much further than
a panto normally goes," says
Willcox. "It's running very
much like a comedy. In fact, it's
like a big Morecombe and Wise
sketch and it's very funny
indeed."

| Toyah is mentioned in an
article in 'The Stage', on Will
Young and the forthcoming Saving
Planet Earth: The BBC
series is hosted by David
Attenborough and Alan Titchmarsh
running over two weeks in summer
2007. The aim is to try and raise
awareness about how human
behaviour is driving some
creatures to the brink of
extinction.
There
will be previously unseen footage
from BBC1 blockbuster Planet
Earth and celebrities including
Brian Blessed, Toyah Willcox, and
ex-SAS man Chris Ryan talking
about the plight of endangered
animals. Tigers, sharks and
rhinos are all running out of
time.
The
series is set to end with a live
fund-raising event to raise cash
for UK conservation charities.
Attenborough
said: "Some scientists
suggest that up to a quarter of
animal species could be extinct
by 2050. But its not too
late - you can be involved in
Saving Planet Earth.
"If
you are a child, this is your
future. If youre a parent,
its your legacy. The time
to act is now."

21st Dec, 2006: 'Aladdin 2006' -
The Stage review |
Aladdin,
Theatre Royal Brighton
December 14th 2006 to
January 14th 2007 Theatre
Royal pantomimes are lavish and
classy with no expense spared.
The sets and the costumes are
superb and there is a five piece
band, although they could do with
less amplification at the start.
Add to that a star performer such
as Toyah Willcox, quite
marvellous as the Genie of the
Lamp and that personable X-Factor
runner-up Chico as Aladdin and
you have a sure fire recipe for
success.
David
Alder as Widow Twankey is a
seasoned pantomime performer and
it is very much an acquired art.
Too often today, big television
names try their hand at it and
fall flat on their faces but
newcomer Chico takes to it like a
duck to water. Another first
timer to the medium is Jennifer
Hubilla who is delightful as the
Princess with voice to match.
Granville
Saxton as Abanazar is the perfect
baddie attracting the usual round
of boos and cat calls. John Clegg
as Wishee Washee has no problem
getting the audience on his side
rolling a gigantic dice to
discover how many bags of sweets
to throw to the audience and then
leading an hilarious rendering of
The Twelve Days of Christmas
holding a bra made for
three with Widow Twankey
and Chris Dennis as the policeman
waving five toilet
rolls.
One
of the many highlights is
Aladdins ride on a magic
carpet, floating above the stage
with various brightly coloured
animal cut-outs passing along
beneath, which has the young
audience in raptures.
Cast:
Chico, Toyah Willcox, Jennifer
Hubilla, Jon Clegg, David Alder,
Trevor Jones, and Granville
Saxton.

Christmas
Toyah Memories: Christmas Cluedo,
December 1990 The
first Christmas of the 90's saw
Toyah play Miss Scarlet in a
special festive edition of Cluedo.
Here are the thoughts of a Cluedo
fan:
"The
show producers must have realised
that they needed strong
characters by now, as the casting
of vivacious Toyah Willcox
showed.
Toyah
was great in the part, with all
of the men drooling over her; yet
still being a complete b*tch to
everyone - especially her
step-mother.
Like
others in the Christmas Special,
she was made to look very similar
to her card equivalent -
especially her hair style.
Toyah
is best known for being an 80's
rock singer ("It's A
Mystery" and more); but she
also has a very strong acting
career behind her. Major parts
for her have been as Miranda in
both "Prospero's Books"
and "The Tempest", but
she has narrated a couple of
children's television series
(e.g. "The
Teletubbies") and has made
many guest appearances in shows
as herself."

Willcox |
The
5-Minute Interview: Toyah
Willcox, Actress, singer,
presenter: 'I've
no sympathy with young, lazy
people. That's why I've no
children'
Toyah
Willcox is appearing in Aladdin
at the Theatre Royal, Brighton,
from today until 14 January
If
I weren't talking to you right
now I'd be...
Reading through the
scripts that have come through.
This morning I got two musicals,
a radio soap and an independent
film script. For me, it's the
wackier, the better. I like
things that make people's jaws
drop open.
Phrase
I use far too often...
"Absolutely."
I say it about everything and
anything. It pacifies people. If
I say it to a film director it
usually means I will do what I
want anyway, but if I say it to
my band I'll probably try to
compromise.
I
wish people would take more
notice of...
Their health. If people
eat badly they think badly.
Everything you allow to enter
your body will influence your
body, whether it's what you watch
on telly, read or eat.
The
most surprising thing that
happened to me was...
Finding out not only how
much I earned when I started
managing myself in 1990 but also
how much people were creaming off
my income. The day I started
managing myself, my income went
up 500 per cent.
A
common misperception of me is...
That I'm vulnerable,
naive and malleable. I'm the
opposite of all those.
I
am not a politician but...
May God help anyone who
voted me in because tax would be
a fixed rate of 20 per cent,
education and work would be
compulsory and National Service
would be back - but it would
teach 18- to 21-year-olds about
business and health. I have no
sympathy with young, lazy people,
which is probably why I don't
have children.
I'm
good at...
Being a problem solver.
It means I get very little life.
I'm
very bad at...
Saying no to people who
have problems.
The
ideal night out is...
In a bordello with David
Bowie. I wouldn't tell my
husband, but then he'd probably
be in a bordello with Debbie
Harry.
In
moments of weakness...
I panic. But if I sit on
it for 24 hours, I can come back
to a problem with a fresh pair of
eyes.
You
know me as an actress and singer
but in truer life I'd have been
a...
Sculptor. I'm such a fan
of Barbara Hepworth and Elisabeth
Frink. I've played many artists
in my career so I think this has
made me want it more.
The
best age to be is...
Now. I believe in living
in the moment.
In
a nutshell, my philosophy is
this:
The greatest thing I've
ever been taught is to do unto
others as you would have them do
unto you. Personally, I'd stuff
them full of chocolate and play
with their private parts!

| ... we were delayed in
time! Or should that be lost in
time? Apologies
for the disappearance of
Dreamscape between Friday 8th and
Tuesday 12th December. My ISP,
inexplicably, deleted the site
from their servers.
All
should be back to normal now,
except that the Downloads haven't
been re-added as yet.
Unfortunately any emails that
were sent to me during those days
I wasn't able to receive either.
A
few visitors have mentioned the
slow running of the Forum. I have
no control over that I'm afraid.
Forumer, who host it, have been
trying to resolve why it's
happening.
