31st Aug, 2006: Vote for
Dreamscape! |
| Please vote for
Dreamscape in the 'BT Digital
Music Awards 2006'. As I say
every year, we obviously don't
have any prospect of winning but
this is always good publicity for
the website and, of course,
Toyah! To vote please click on
the banner below or the little
box to your left. They have
changed the way it works this
year - you can vote once every
day. Thanks in advance for
any votes :o)
In
2001 Dreamscape placed 324th
out of over 2,600 music websites,
in 2002 we did even better by
coming 244th from 3000
sites. The following year we
placed at number 129 from
thousands of music based
websites, and in 2004 Dreamscape
came 195th from over 6000
entrants. Last year we were
number 165 from
approximately 10,000 music
websites.

| The 'Net Talk'
Toyah Special was aired again on
Tuesday afternoon (29th August,
1-3pm). Ross, who interviewed
Toyah, has said it will air again
sometime soon, and on an evening.
Exactly when will be added either
here, the forum and/or the 'Net
Talk' website, so please keep
checking back. I know a lot of
people are still looking forward
to listening to this.
Toyah is pictured, wearing that
famous bright pink hat from last
year, in this week's 'TV Quick'
magazine, dated 2nd - 8th
September. It's a small article
also featuring Cluadia Schiffer,
Zandra Rhodes and others:
"Its
A Mystery why singer Toyah
Willcox doesn't Want To Be Free
from that odd looking hat-but al
least it matches the carpet"

BBC Worldwide are featuring the
recently released Peter Pan
2 disc CD as one of their
"products of August" in
their BBC Radio Collection.
When
Peter Pan flies into the night
nursery of Wendy, John and
Michael Darling, he takes them on
the journey - and the adventure -
of a lifetime. Mermaids, wolves
and Indians weave their spell in
the magical Never Never Land -
where also lurks the wicked
Captain Hook. Toyah Willcox stars
as Peter Pan with Ron Moody as
Captain Hook, Roy Hudd as Smee
and June Whitfield as Mrs Darling
in this spectacular BBC Radio 4
dramatisation, recorded in Dolby
Surround Sound with stunning
sound effects and specially
composed music.

The recently re-issued Special
Edition Quadrophenia DVD
was one of the DVD's of the week
in the "Culture"
section of the 'Sunday Times'
(dated 20th August 2006):
Quadrophenia
special edition
Film Four stars
Extras Four stars
The
zeitgeist-capturing, cult-classic
story of sharply suited,
pill-popping, party-going and -
who could forget? -
Lambretta-riding teens is
rereleased on a new DVD featuring
that rare commodity: interesting
and well-produced extras. The
story of Jimmy (Phil Daniels) and
his merry band of mods, as they
dance, shag and fight their way
from Shepherds Bush to
Brighton beach, to a soundtrack
provided by the Who, is revisited
by the director, Franc Roddam,
and many of the lead actors,
including Daniels and Toyah
Willcox, who reflect on the
films themes of coming of
age and forging an identity.
Neatly titled sections of the
documentary cover everything a
die-hard fan could want to know,
from the music to the suits to
the fact that Sting cant
really dance. HG: Universal, 18,

29th Aug, 2006: 'Net Talk' - Bank
Holiday Toyah Special - Info |
The 'Net
Talk' Toyah Special has been
broadcast, at time of writing,
three times over the past day;
10am - Midday & 5 - 7pm
yesterday and Midnight - 2am
early this morning. And I have
managed to miss each broadcast.
Hopefully this will be included
in the 'Net Talk' schedules again
sometime soon. Toyah
talked about working with the
legendary Katharine Hepburn...
and her first forays into theatre
and music:
"I
enjoyed theatre but I didnt
want to do musicals, the music
did not appeal to me at all, I
was a rock chick. I started going
around asking punk bands 'Does
anyone need a singer?' There was
no path to being a punk singer-
it was all about chance.
Eventually I got into a band from
Golders Green and we used to
rehearse at the cemetery."
She
also talked about, the recently
rereleased, Quadrophenia:
"I first auditioned for
the Leslie Ash role and John
Lydon (Johnny Rotten) was going
for the Phil Daniels part but the
film company would not insure
him, they thought he was a
liability. Then I had to fight
for the role of Monkey, I went
round to the directors house and
Phil Daniels happened to be there
so I had to snog him but that was
fine as I knew him anyway
and then I got the role"
Toyah
went on to talk about the hits: "People
always think of 'Its A
Mystery' as my first hit but to
me, the one in my heart is
'Victims Of The Riddle' because
it number one for 12 months in
the Independent Chart. I was
proud of that. To me the Indie
chart is where all the important
stuff is. 'Blue Meaning' was no 2
in the Album chart, but singles
were much bigger back then,
thats what counted"
On
favourite songs from her own back
catalogue: "All the
songs are infused with so many
memories, what was happening at
the time
so I cant
really name any favourites. For
instance I dont like
'Mystery' because the band had
just split, they thought I
concentrated too much on acting
so it was just me and Joel left.
It was heartbreaking.
And
when I was writing 'Thunder' I
was pacing around my flat, Diana
& Charles getting married on
the telly, two stalkers had my
phone number so they were outside
the house phoning every five
minutes
and they were
stopping me from doing the one
thing that would make them feel
better - writing new songs.
If
I really had to choose one
favourite song it would be
'Martian Cowboy'. I was
doing a play called Trafford
Tanzi during the evening and
recording the 'Love Is The Law'
album all through the night. I
used to take sleeping pills to
chill out so when I did the
vocals to 'Martian' I sounded so
relaxed! I used to slip the pills
into Joels coffee as
well!"
Toyah
on sexuality: "It never
ever occurred to me that I could
use sexuality to sell records
until later, Madonna opened my
eyes to that. I hated my
30s, I put on
weight
in my 40s I
Iost two stone, I was at my most
sexually potent, I have made a
point of being sexual, hence the
short skirts. Ive never
bothered with children so
Ive taken the last embers
of my biological clock on
stage."
And
on learning: "I wish
Id learned more! I wish
Id paid attention at
school
I just pissed my
school days away, I was very
lazy. I wish Id learned an
instrument, not doing that has
always held me back. I wish
Id read more. I was
dyslexic but I could plough my
way through a book."
And,
finally, on the future:
"I have a lot of projects
coming up. Im a director
and a co-presenter on a gameshow
that is probably going to go on
Channel 5. Ive started a
company called Eccentric Games
with a friend of mine.
Theres a TV series called China
Detective, lead role in Medusa,
film with Phil
Daniels
Im not at home
watching the telly! Im
busier than ever. People ask me
'what are you doing at the
moment?' and I say you really
dont want to know! People
dont realise theres
so many projects that just boil
over and never happen
"

She tours England and Wales in

Hitmakers Tour'.
Faith & Music, the ITV

this year) in their new run. This
may air on the channel before the
end of 2006.[ NB: Update: The
new 12-part series of Faith

]
As reported above, it looks
likely that Toyah will be a guest
at the 'Collectormania 2006'

Rounding off the year is Aladdin

22nd Aug, 2006: 'Mod Culture' -
Quadrophenia review |
The 'Mod
Culture' website has reviewed the
new Quadrophenia DVD: It's
incredibly difficult to review
Quadrophenia as a movie in 2006.
Many of us have been brought up
with it, been inspired by it and
ultimately distanced ourselves
from its movie simplistic view of
what 'Mod' is. But try to take
away any pre-conceptions you may
have and watch it again - you'll
realise that Quadrophenia is
still a very powerful British
youth movie which maintains an
edge over 25 years after its
initial release.
And
if you're serious about buying
the movie, buy this version.
Quadrophenia: Special Edition is
the version of the movie that's
been waiting to come out for
years. The original DVD was a
straight copy over of the video,
the US version by Rhino (which I
did some of the extras for) was
an improvement, but still lacked
in terms of picture and sound.
This version seems to get it just
right.

Originally

Toyah! was the first live
Toyah album and followed up two
studio albums and a string of
singles (Ieya, Victims of the
Riddle, Bird in Flight - all
included here) which charted well
in the independent charts.
ITV
(then ATV) commisioned a
documentary on Toyah in 1980 in
which cameras followed her
acting, presenting, recording and
rehearsing. A concert in
Wolverhampton was also filmed for
inclusion and is where this live
album hails from. The full
concert was recorded but a pair
of tracks were excluded and used
as b-sides to the a single
release of "Danced
(live)".
This
special edition of the album -
with expanded artwork - brings
together all of these live tracks
for the first time. In addition
further live bonus tracks make
their CD debut including songs
recorded at the ICA, London
recorded just before this line-up
of the Toyah band disbanded
forever. Four previously
unreleased tracks from 1982's The
Changeling Tour close the CD.
Recorded in Glasgow, these
include the uncut unexpurgated

Quadrophenia review |
A great
review of the new Quadrophenia
DVD in this month's 'Total Film'
magazine: "Get
me those fucking locations now,
or youre all fucking
fired!"
A
motivational moment, there, from
first-time director Franc Roddam,
recounting his bottle-waving
bollocking of a gaggle of surly
scouts. (They did indeed get him
the fucking locations.)
Roddams
a fascinating case: a plummy TV
doc-jockey who somehow marshalled
a generation of upstart Brits
(Phil Daniels, Ray Winstone,
Leslie Ash, Toyah Willcox) and
cajoled and improv-ed and
corner-cutted an instant classic
that still stands up as a
blueprint for modern
restless-yoof pics.
Daniels
showpiece take on troubled
Mod-squadder Jimmy is a joyous
mesh of hormonal torment and
snarling bluster. Hes the
howling, scowling embodiment of
in old Philip
Larkins phrase
the strength and pain of
being young. The backdrop
(Mods, Rockers, 1965 and all
that) might have fallen away, but
Jimmys plight will always
ping with kids today, kids
anyday: love/hate relationship
with his family-home cocoon;
living for the weekend; too young
to strike out, too old to sit
still... The irony stings
sharpest in his confrontation
with freshly matured old Rocker
Winstone (I dont
wanna be the same as everybody
else. Thats why Im a
Mod, see?).
This
fresh edition, with exhaustive
docs and chummy commentary,
throws thrilling new light on
Roddams make-do methods.
Its the way he mixes
evocative locations with
cheapskate artistry that lifts
the film beyond regulation
kitchen-sink docu-drama: the
opening shimmer of a sun-fried
Beachy Head; churning Brighton
breakers slapping against
Jimmys parka... In the On
Location With Franc featurette,
he admits to repeating the trick
of wetting the
streets to gloss a little
cinematic sass over the
Shepherds Bush dank.
This
emphasis on sheen occasionally
contradicts the thrilling sense
of seething, street-level
humanity, but Roddam also has a
piercing, documentarians
eye for the poignancy behind the
solidarity: trembling and
degraded drug-hoovers; futile
inter-gang cruelty; inarticulate
tribal tubthumping (We are
the Mods! We are the Mods! We are
the, we are the, we are the
Mods!).
Not
that he doesnt acknowledge
the guts and glamour of the clan,
particularly in the sequence
where the acne-speckled Mod
warriors take formation and
thunder down to Brighton on their
multi-mirrored Lambretta
battle-horses.

Included are previously

release date will be announced
soon.

the two volume 'Safari Singles
Collection'.

album, also included are 'Ghosts'
and 'Neon Womb' from the same
Wolverhampton concert, two songs
recorded at the ICA in 1980, and
four songs recorded on 'The

Glasgow Apollo. (I was at that
gig -Yipee!! ;o))
The tracklist is comprised of 18
tracks.
With the release of 'Toyah!
Toyah! Toyah!' all of Toyah's
Safari album releases are now

Toyah Willcox on
Lytton Strachey
Tuesday 15 August 2006
15:45-16:00 (Radio 4 FM) To
celebrate 150 years of the
National Portrait Gallery,
well-known people select a
portrait from the gallery to
comment on.
Toyah
chooses Dora Carrington's
intimate study of the writer
Lytton Strachey - the man Dora
adored and with whom she shared a
menage a trois. Willcox reveals
how she is drawn to Carrington as
a free spirit, despite Dora's
reputation for promiscuity and
enjoying a lesser talent than the
others in the Bloomsbury Group.
