HEAVEN & EARTH SHOW : PAPER & WEBSITE REVIEW
April 29 : Toyah was on the Heaven And Earth Show this morning, and as well as doing the usual paper review she took a look at a few websites too.

'THE SHAGAROUND' WORLD PREMIERE
April 26 : This play opened tonight at the Nuffield Theatre in Southampton. Toyah plays a character called Beth. It runs until May 19 then moves to the Ashcroft Theatre in Croydon (22 to 27 May), and then onto the Soho Theatre in London a little later (23 July to 18 August).

RICHARD ALLINSON SHOW : BBC RADIO 2
April 25 : Toyah was the guest on this show tonight at 11pm. She spoke about her role in the new play The Shagaround, which opens tomorrow in Southampton. Toyah mentioned that the word shagaround is Southampton slang for a bloke who has a few women on the 'go' at the same time. She plays Beth, a liberated nurse in the production that moves to Croydon and then to the Soho Theatre in London in the coming months.

Among other topics Toyah talked about Cabaret, working with Laurence Olivier and Katherine Hepburn, how 'exposed' she feels when singing onstage as herself as opposed to acting in a play. She also mentioned how "pissed off" she initially was about a her name being used in Coronation Street (this is the reason why she uses the Willcox more nowadays) for the character Toyah Battersby.

Future plans include playing Titania in A Midsummer Night's Dream and more filming for the Holiday Show. Toyah also
revealed that Robert is about to go on tour with Jeff Beck and then Tool (v. cool band), that she would love to visit Las Vegas and Palm Springs, and that she would consider cosmetic surgery, "I'd have everything done", she laughed!

MY FAVOURITE HYMNS

TOYAH IN 'THE SENTINEL'
April 20 : Toyah was featured on the cover of the 'Shout' section of this local Stoke newspaper today.

Toyah's Dream

Alan Cookman previews 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' starring Toyah Willcox.

Your chance to star with former punk rocker.

Former punk queen Toyah Willcox will play Titania, Queen of the Fairies, in this year's open-air Shakespeare production at Stafford Castle.
The singer, actress and TV presenter will also play Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons, when A Midsummer Night's Dream opens for a two week run on June 28.

Toyah has twice before appeared in A Midsummer Night's Dream. She was Puck in a production in Regents Park and Hermia at Birmingham Rep. But she first came to prominence as Mad in Jubilee, the punk epic directed by Derek Jarman in 1977. She later played Monkey in the cult Mods-and-Rockers movie Quadrophenia with The Who.

In the early eighties, Toyah had a string of hits with her own band, including It's A Mystery and I Want To Be Free. Now she is a busy actress, appearing in everything from Amadeus to Jack And The Beanstalk, and presenter of TV shows like BBC1's Holiday, Holiday On A Shoestring and The Heaven & Earth Show.

"Toyah will bring a well of experience and knowledge to the production," says the Gatehouse Theatre's Steve Freeman, who is producing A Midsummer Night's Dream with colleague Dan Shaw. "Her career spans 24 years, and she has a CV that ranges
from Shakespeare in Regents Park to Top Of The Pops.

"She's a personality that eceryone knows, whether as an actress, singer or TV presenter and she's going to make this year's event at the castle something really special." Steve says the cast of A Midsummer Night's Dream will include other familiar faces whose names will be revealed shortly.

Meanwhile, there are opportunities for local performers to appear alongside Toyah and the other professionals in this year's alfresco production. Director Peter Dayson is looking for local talent to fill 10 roles to be taken by amateurs.

At the end she was beaten by fellow guest Midge Ure.

HEAVEN & EARTH SHOW : TOYAH ON RETREAT
April 1 : There was a repeat showing of Toyah's weekend retreat in Dorset, at the 'Foundation for Joyous Living'. The idea of the weekend is to "break down barriers that people hold since childhood" through dancing, shaking, singing and hugging. Toyah enjoyed the experience and said for the first time she felt free, though she did find the shaking about slightly weird.

March 2001
HEAVEN & EARTH SHOW
March 25 : Another review of the weeks top newspaper stories on this show this morning. TOYAH RECEIVES DOCTORATE
March 8 : Toyah received her Honorary Doctorate in recognition of  her achievements in Performing Arts and Broadcasting  today. The ceremony was held at The  International Convention Centre. As Toyah collected her award she gave her backing to the  Birmingham Dyslexia Association (BDA). She said, "They're  obviously doing a lot of good and have a lot of determination to have set up this organisation and got this far. I hope they can continue."

Toyah acknowledged that the Doctorate was a world away from her achievements at Edgbaston School for Girls, "I'm very flattered to have been given this award today, but I can't
stop laughing about it because I was very badly behaved at school and I wasted my time there completely. When I left school I got my life together and really fought hard to establish a career. I started learning as soon as I left school because I gained the freedom of choice, and you continue to learn throughout your lifetime."

February 25 : The usual paper review by Toyah on this show this morning. Talking about what was hitting the headlines all through this week.

IT'S YOUR FUNERAL
February 18 : Toyah started off by saying that she has thought about her funeral but doesn't dwell on it.  She would like a Tibetan Sky Burial, in which the body is taken to a mountain top, dismebered, pumelled, and then fed to the vultures. Toyah said she would prefer to die before her father or husband, and if she had to be reincarnated she would like to return to earth as a man and 'sin forever'.

The funeral ceremony would include David Bowie lighting an eternal flame in her memory, and Billie Whitelaw, Peter Gabriel, Dawn French & others she admires saying goodbye to her. At the altar would be a huge picture of her from 'Brave New World', the image in which she would like to be remembered.

Elgar's 'Nimrod' would be played and Toyah would like the poem 'I'm Not Gone' read. Those attending would overeat foods from different cultures, get very drunk, think about their funerals and be confused by Toyah's The funeral would end with a 40 piece orchestra belting out  'I Want To Be Free', with anyone who wants to, joining in karaoke style.

And Toyah's epitaph? : 'She came, she lisped, she went'!

HOLIDAY GUIDES

She also went to Coyuca Lagoon, totally tropical, full of wildlife,
and virtually concrete free. This is where films like Tarzan and
African Queen were shot.

Toyah visited Walita's Restaurant, basically just an old woman's house, where food and drink was served. She also gave Toyah a face pack, full of minerals, that she promised would 'take fiveyears off her'. Toyah discovered the mud in the face pack was from the wildlife filled riverbank!

I LOVE 1981
January 20 : Toyah was featured in this show on BBC 2 UK TV today. Unfortunately it wasn't as one of the cool things about 1981 but simply commenting on Shakin' Stevens and Kim Wilde.
