Toyah - Live! overview - Famous gigs - live! videos and CDs
:: return to live! index
| Live! Live!
Live! Since 1978 Toyah, the band, and solo artist, has played live hundreds of times at hundreds of different venues in many countries. Live, Toyah really comes alive and in the past she has said that no one can hope to understand her musically unless they have seen her perform live. It was the Toyah band's early live gigs that built the reputation and loyal fan base that later helped to catapult Toyah to national fame and enormous commercial success. Long before the chart hits and countless TV appearances Toyah were always assured of a sold-out gig through nothing more than word of mouth about how awesome they were live. |
Toyah gigs
also helped songs like 'War Boys', 'Jungles of Jupiter'
and 'Angel and Me' become so well known despite
never being released as singles or given much radio
airplay. They are seen as just as important, if not more
so, as the singles in contributing to Toyah's musical
legacy. Nowadays most chart acts not only lip sync on TV shows but at their so-called 'live' concerts too. Playing live was/is so important to Toyah that not one but two live albums were released, one a double, and two live concert videos too. These releases are crucial to anyone just discovering Toyah as they capture what was so special about them live in the early 80s. Even Toyah's fiercest critics had to admit that the band live were an awesome experience. |
Many Toyah
fans think that Warrior Rock, the live double album
recorded on the last two UK dates of 'The Changeling'
tour in July 1982, should have been released on video.
This probably was a missed opportunity but at least we,
and any new recruits, have the albums and videos that were
released as a lasting reminder. Toyah continues to tour, and in the 90's probably played as many gigs as she did with the Toyah band way back in the late 70's/early 80's. Let's hope there are more live gigs sometime in the future. |
Famous Gigs
| Lafayette

Rainbow
Theatre, North London : 21 Feb 1981.
"Among the laser beams, through clouds of swirling smoke. Toyah struts and strides - a truly spine-tingling performance. "Toyah" - band and vocalist - frenzied, pulsating, mystical, fabulous - an explosive experiance." London Trax magazine wrote: "The irrepressible Toyah Willcox is marching on, opening up new horizons in audio visual entertainment. She is now number one in a field of one. An original." The concert was released as a BBC video (Toyah At The Rainbow : BBCV3012), long since deleted but it pops up regularly on eBay and receives very high bids. Band : Vocals : Toyah Set List : War Boys |
Drury Lane,
London : 24 Dec 1981.
This gig was broadcast live on BBC2's The Old Grey Whistle Test, Christmas Eve 1981. It was also released as a BBC concert video: "Since her first remarkable appearance on BBC video, Toyah has become a popular household name through her hit records: I Want To Be Free, It's A Mystery and Thunder In The Mountains... Experience the dynamism of Toyah's colourful stage act in this spectacular recording." Band : Vocals : Toyah Set List : Good Morning Universe |
H/smith
Odeon, London : 17/18 July 1982.
The culmination of 'The Changeling' UK Tour. The final two shows on July 17th and 18th were recorded and released as the 1982 live album, 'Warrior Rock : Toyah On Tour'. This album illustrates how exceptional
the Toyah band were live. This line up may have been the
greatest of the many variations over the years.
Unfortunately the show wasn't released on video to
accompany the double album. Band : Vocals : Toyah Set List : Good Morning Universe |
