Having spent all of 1984
concentrating on her acting career it was great
to welcome Toyah back to music in 1985. She had a
new record label and a new 'mature' image and was
no longer part of a band. In early '85 Toyah
appeared on Razzmatazz to perform 'Don't
Fall In Love (I Said)'. The performance took
place in a boxing ring surrounded by hundreds of
kids and Toyah wore a pair of boxing gloves! |
On 22nd April Toyah
guested on Wogan, a chat show hosted by
Terry Wogan. She performed 'Don't Fall In Love (I
Said)' and was then interviewed by Terry. They
discussed Lord Olivier and how he used to get her
into trouble while they filmed The Ebony Tower
in 1983, Toyah's crazy childhood and teenage
years and lots more besides. Toyah started the
conversatin by saying, "You once said that I
looked like an unmade bed. Well I've come like a
made one tonight!". Of course the ever
genial Irishman denied this, blaming the comment
on his Radio Two colleague Jimmy Young. |
Toyah ventured back to
her native Birmingham on 28th April 1985 to
appear on BBC afternoon entertainment show Pebble
Mill. She perfromed 'Don't Fall In Love (I
Said)' (right) surrounded by a wedding cake, a
bride & groom and a gang of fans showering TW
with confetti. There was also a performance of
'World In Action' (far right) where Toyah mimed
with a huge shiny cylinder between her and the
camera! Paul Coia interviewed Toyah, beginning
well by asking Toyah about The Ivory Tower (it's
not his fault, he's from Largs! - only joking),
and she also presented prizes to the winners of a
photography competition. |
Toyah, Pebble Mill on
28th April 1985, trying to avoid the cylinder!! |
Four years after her
memorable 'I Want To Be free' appearance (18th
May 1985 to be precise), Toyah returned as a
guest on The Kenny Everett Show. She
performed 'Don't Fall In Love (I Said)'. |
On 30th May 1985 Toyah
once again travelled to Germany to perform 'Don't
Fall In Love (I Said) on Formel Eins. This
appearance is significant as it may be the only
studio performance where Toyah wore her infamous
black rubber dress. This is the dress she wore in
the 'Don't Fall' video, that caused a minor stir
in 1985. Of course nowadays she would probably be
accused of being overdressed but back then
things were oh so different. |
Toyah was back at Pebble
Mill in 1985 to perform 'America For
Beginners' (right) and 'World In Action' (far
right). For 'America' there was set 'scenarios'
to illustrate the lyrics of the song: Toyah with
a pic of the Statue of Liberty behind her, Toyah
sitting on the bonnet of a convertible, and most
bizzarely Toyah sitting in a mock bar with a
cocktail (looking slightly uncomfortable it has
to be said), weird!! |
Why have one Toyah when
you can have dozens? Toyah performing 'World In
Action' on Pebble Mill in 1985. |
Toyah was back in Europe
in September 1985 to appear on the German show Musik
Convoy, performing 'Soul Passing Through
Soul' to a huge outdoor audience. For some reason
the first verse of 'Soul' was well underway
before TW actaully reached the stage, but being
the seasoned trouper she was/isToyah simply
carried on as if nothing was wrong! |
Another German music
show, and another lip synched performance of
'Soul Passing Through Soul' from September 1985.
This programme was called Goldene Eins and
seems similar to Noel's House Party. The
producers of the show had thoughtfully placed a
huge picture of Toyah as a backdrop to where she
would be performing. Unforunately the picture was
Toyah during her 'Brave New World' look, a good
three years previous to this appearance! |
Not strictly, not atall
actually, a TV show. This is Toyah appearing in
the 1985 film Lorca And The Outlaws. She
is only seen onscreen for a few seconds
performing the stunning song 'Lion Of Symmetry'. |
This clip, filmed at the
Epcot Centre in Disneyworld, Florida, saw the
birth of Toyah the babe. Any signs of Toyah the
punk were now gone, replaced by the 'new' Toyah
with long blond hair and wearing crop tops and
mini skirts! This was a performance of 'We Play
Machines' from a TV show called Disney
Knockout, broadcast in 1986. |
Toyah performing a
rerecorded version of 'Echo Beach on Live From
The Palladium, though this wasn't a live
performance. Toyah was at this time starring in Cabaret
in London's West End. Aside from looking
absolutely gorgeous this guest appearance is
memorable because one of the daft dancers, while
attempting to rip off Toyah's long skirt to
reveal a mini-skirt underneath, grabbed hold of
her tights and tore them to shreds. Toyah
recently revealed that this is the worst memory
of her professional career. |
Also in 1987, Toyah
guested on the comedy show Lift Off,
complete with newly added hair extensions. She
performed a stonking, lip synched, varsion of
'Echo Beach', and as you can see looked
absolutely fantastic too! She also appeared in a
short sketch with David Copperfield. |
In 1988 Toyah appeared
on French And Saunders and performed the
Patti Smith (though written by Bruce Springsteen
fact fiends) classic 'Because The Night'. This
being French And Saunders a comedy sketch
was involved with Dawn & Jennifer playing
extras who keep mucking up the recording of
Toyah's performance. It's fairly amusing,
especially as they keep referring to TW as
Madonna. Toyah gets her revenge though, by
calling the duo "bloody morons"!Maybe
that's why she never got that guest role in Absolutely
Fabulous!! |
It's 1991 and it's very,
very early. Yes! Toyah guested on ITV breakfast
show TVAM. She performed a live version of
'Brilliant Day' from the 'Ophelia's Shadow' album
and even at such an early hour managed to hit all
the right notes. Acompanying TW on guitar was
Chris Bonnacci, a member of Girlschool, the band
Toyah toured with as Shedevils and later Strange
Girls. Toyah was also interviewed by Mike Morris
and Lorraine "really, really good"
Kelly and talked about appearing as Janis Joplin
in Cheap Thrills, appearing in Amadeus,
the release of her solo album, 'Ophelia's Shadow'
and 'Kneeling At The Shrine' by Sunday All Over
The World. |
(New - 29th January 03)Toyah guested on See
You Sunday in 1991. This was a BBC Wales
entertainment show and as well as appearing
alongside Michael Palin, chatting about
democracy, music tastes and trying to identify a
mystery object, Toyah also found the time to
squeeze in live performances of 'Brilliant Day'
and 'Because The Night'. She sounded in fine
voice, especially considering it was a Sunday
morning! |
In 1994 Toyah,
accompanied on backing vocals by Tayce, guested
on This Morning and performed 'Now And
Then' She was also interviewed by Richard &
Judy on all manner of topics: dieting and it's
connection with the fashion industry, starring in
The Ink Thief, and much more. Richard
Madely was his usual ridiculous self but at least
he didn't tell Toyah to "say something
shocking" as he did when she guested on the
show a few years previously. |
Toyah also appeared on
cable/satellite channel UK Living, on the show Living
Now. Again she was accompanied by Tacye and
they performed a superb live version 'Out Of The
Blue'. Toyah was also interviewed, talking about
working with Laurence Olivier on The Ebony
Tower and Katherine Hepburn on The Corn Is
Green, and the time she spent in Europe
recording and touring with the band Kiss Of
Reality. |
In late 1994 Toyah, once
again, returned to Pebble Mill in
Birmingham. TW and Tayce performed a new version
of 'It's A Mystery' and 'Out Of The Blue', both
live. Toyah was also interviewed by host Ross
King with Toyah revealing how exciting it was to
be touring the UK singing all the old hits again
for the first time in a decade. She also chatted
about Peter Pan, ("I'd like to play
Captain Hook but apparently I'm too tall!"
she chortled), Robert Fripp, and giving the kiss
of life to her fish!! |
(New - 29th January 03)In 1998 Toyah appeared
on the Live Six Show on Sky. She was
interviewed and talked about not being part of
"the big '80s revival", constant
gigging, and playing at the Mean Fiddler in
London. There then followed a brilliant acoustic
performance of 'It's A Mystery'. |
(New - 29th January 03)Also in 1998 Toyah
guested on Peter Karrie Unmasked, a BBC
Wales programme which was unfortunately not
networked to the rest of the UK. Unfortunate
because Toyah performs an absolutely stunning
live version of 'The Vow' accompanied by the TV
show's orchestra. She looks amazing too, and is
interviewed about Teletubbies, growing up
and oodles more! |
In 1999 Toyah appeared
on the National Lottery's Greatest Hits
and performed a great new version of the classic
'It's A Mystery'. Toyah really went to town and
not only did she have on some gold eye shadow and
her hair plaited specially but she also wore one
of her Melissa Caplan outfits. Show host Angela
Griffin introduced Toyah by claiming 'It's A
Mystery' was a "number one hit". Not
quite but who cares when TW gave such a cool
performance. Toyah also released the lottery
balls and as she pressed the button exclaimed
"may this finger make you rich"!
Unfortunately it didn't. |
Toyah guested on Songs
Of Praise in 1999 and performed the old Bette
Midler tearjerker 'The Rose'. Toyah lip synched
the song as she moved through her home (at the
time), Reddish House. |
Another Songs Of
Praise presented by Toyah, and another lip
synched performance of 'The Rose. This was a St.
Valentine's Day special and Toyah hosted the show
from Paris. It was over twenty years and a long,
long way from 'Neon Womb' on Poprock In Berlin! |
(New - 29th January 03)Toyah presented Songs
Of Praise on the last Sunday of May 2002.
This was Toyah's fourth time in as many years
presenting the programme, and came from York.
Toyah introduced the show with: "I'm about
to explore the unknown, the seemingly impossible
and the frankly unbelievable". Much of the
music in the show came from York's impressive
cathedral and Toyah interviewed the Archbishop of
York, Rev. David Bishop. Toyah also joined in a
rehearsal of the York Mystery Plays, and
interviewed actor John Hall. He played God in the
Mystery Plays staged in York Minster in 2000.
Toyah performed the classic "It's A Mystery"
accompanied only by a piano. and ended the show
by saying: "For what it's worth, my advice
would be to go through life with your eyes and
heart open because those among us are not always
what we expect them to be. For me, God is in
everything that we see, everyone that we meet and
everything that we do. Now, is that such a
mystery?". |
