Sounds Toyah, currently
playing Sally Bowles in the West End revival of Cabaret,
resumes her record career on EG Records this weekend with
a single - a reworking of Martha And The Muffins' 1980
hit 'Echo Beach'. An album is not far behind. Trax Toyah Willcox, who enjoyed a sell out concert at the Rainbow on February 21, has lined up a long British tour for May and June. Dates in the South East on her 17 date tour include Brighton Top Rank on may 25 and Hammersmith Odeon on June 6. A New album on the
Safari label is in the pipeline, scheduled to coincide
with the tour. It will be the first album to feature new
new line up of Joel Bogen, Phil Spalding, Nigel Glockler
and Adrian Lee. It will be produced by Nick Tauber. NME Toyah this week releases her first album since the hugely successful 'Anthem'. It's called 'The Changeling' and, appropriately enough, marks another change both in her music and her appearance. The cover represents the fantasy nature of many of the songs - Creepy Room, Street Creature, Castaways, The Druids, Angel And Me, The Packt, Life In The trees, Dawn Chorus, Run Wild Run Free and Brave New World. Issued on the Safari label, the album was digitally recorded, and it marks Toyah's first collaboration with producer Steve Lillywhite. As previously reported, Toyah's major month-long UK tour begins on June 18, with a band line-up comprising Joel Bogen, Phil Spalding, Simon Phillips and newcomer Keith Hale, replacing Adrian Lee on keyboards. |
Record Mirror Toyah, who romps semi-naked in the forthcoming television film 'The Ebony Tower' releases her new album 'Love Is The Law' this week. 'Love Is The Law' features 10 tracks which Toyah wrote with her keyboard player Simon Darlow. Toyah began work on the album while playing her lead role in the hit comedy 'Trafford Tanzi'. Toyah is now lining up
some television appearances and a major pre-Christmas
tour is on the cards although nothing has yet been
confirmed. 'The Ebony Tower' should be screened early in
the New Year. Smash Hits
Toyah Willcox was doing okay. She was all over the papers and TV, everybody knew her name but nobody bought her records. Then, just the other week, she got the kind of break that artists dream of, a slagging from David Hepworth in the singles column of Smash Hits. Even better, ha said that "Four From Toyah" had no chance of making the charts, a comment which is as good as a residency at 'TOTP'. It's no surprise therefore to see her streaking up the charts and planning her biggest tour to date. Between now and the start of the tour Toyah will be pursuing her acting career, filming an episode for the "Tales Of The Unexpected" TV series (a story called "Blue Marigolds" in which she will play a character called Myra). Viewers in the Midlands
will also be able to see Toyah every Tuesday night
throughout March as she returns to co-host BBC
Birmingham's "Look Here" series. Plans are also
being made for a new studio album which will be released
to coincide with the tour. |
Record Mirror 16th January 1982 Three Films For Toyah Toyah's bid to take over the world will continue through 1982. Already, she says that she is lining up starring roles in three films, including one based on herself, and she'll be appearing in a weekly TV series in the spring. Toyah plans to appear in a horror musical, a spoof film partly about her own life, and a detective story. The horror movie will be set in New York and Toyah says, "It's more of a psychological movie, not a rock movie. It's about a singer who goes around murdering journalists and management people". Toyah will play the part of an alien called Vulcan in the spoof movie, and it's about an alien being planted on earth to rip off record companies. Toyah says that it's too early to reveal the details behind the detective film, but the television series is for BBC2 and it will be called 'Dear Heart' and is a teenage version of 'Not The Nine O'Clock News'. With all this film activity, it looks as though Toyah won't have too much time for live work, although she's planning a huge open air spectacular concert for the summer. She says planning is still in its early stages and as yet negotiations are still going on with various local councils to find a suitable location. "I hope there'll
be one or two surprises but I don't want to give anything
more away at the moment." she told Record Mirror
this week. NME Toyah Willcox, who was
the subject of an NME article some months back, is a part
English, part Spanish show-biz lady signed to Safari
Records. She's played opposite Katherine Hepburn along
the way and has also appeared in such movies as Jubilee
and Quadrophenia. Her future acting gigs include a
sizeable role in TV's forthcoming Dr Jekyll
series, starring David Hemmings. Disc-wise, she and her
band, which is also known as Toyah, have released a two-part
single 'Victims Of The Riddle' (SAFE15, July 1979) plus a
six track 7" ap (that's Safari's idea of a cross
between an EP and an LP) known to the trade as 'Sheep
Farming In Barnet' (Sap1, August 1979). A new single is
due shortly and will probably be one of the songs that
bedecked the recent Shoestring episode. |
