Video Review Magazine 1984 Toyah! Toyah! Toyah! (All The Hits) It's a strange irony that, of
all the strutting, posing pop stars around, Toyah is
regarded and respected as one of our finest "serious"
actresses and yet her videos hardly display this talent
atall. Like most, they rely on strong dynamic images
rather than plot development of storyline. And mostly it
works, simply because Toyah looks so natural and so
dynamic. |
In 'I Want to be Free', she
looks, and acts like a spoilt brat, then - with a change
of costume and hairstyle - she makes aquite convincing (and
wholly charismatic) warrior goddess. 'Brave New World'
and 'Rebel Run' are disappointing for their lack of
adventure - simply Toyah trying to look "mysterious"
over a backdrop of visual wizardry.
But the final live film of Toyah performing 'It's A Mystery' reaffirms her good humour, charm, energy and rapport with an audience - and leaves you wanting more. |
